As a young girl, Shenzhen-born Angel Chen learned sewing techniques from her grandmother, and would regularly flick through fashion magazines, aspiring to be like John Galliano. She was just 17 when she started interning for couture and contemporary houses including Vera Wang, Marchesa and Alexander Wang in New York. She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in womenswear from Central Saint Martins in 2014, and upon graduation she debuted at Shanghai Fashion Week to sensational international acclaim.
Backed by exemplary craftsmanship, her individuality as a designer radiates through a vivid play on colours, unexpected silhouettes and boundary-pushing fabrics.
Landing Sony as her sponsor for her 2014 graduate collection, ‘Les Noces’ (The Wedding)’, her following SS15 catwalk entitled ‘The Rite of Spring’ secured orders from renowned LA retailer H.Lorenzo. In May 2015, she created a capsule SS16 collection called ‘Youthquake’ for the esteemed retailer’s window display. Further to her achievements, she’s done collaborations with Sony creating electronic accessories; bags and cases for cellphones and cameras, as well as partnerships with the likes of Airbnb, Uber, Swarovski and Khiel’s.
As a young designer, Chen has already engaged a number of infuencers such as Dua Lipa, Chris Li Yu Chun, Fan Bing Bing, Zhou Zun, Jike Junyi, Heidi Lee, Amanda Steele and William Chan Wai Ting. She has garnered tremendous attention on an international scale, with her striking collections published in Vogue, i-D, The Times, Wonderland and Hunger to name a few. Her debut collection lead to i-D magazine naming her as one of the ‘Top 5 graduate designers of the year’, and the following year she scooped Fashion Scout’s coveted ‘Ones to Watch’ award for her AW'15 collection, which was presented during London Fashion Week. Most recently in 2016, she was shortlisted for Forbes’s ‘30 Under 30’ as a top young entrepreneur of arts and design.
