DATE ESTABLISHED: 1815
Since its founding over 200 years ago, Pringle of Scotland has built its reputation as a thoroughly modern luxury house specialising in the finest cashmere. Once loved by movie icons like Grace Kelly, today the label is a firm favourite amongst A-listers like Gigi Hadid and Tilda Swinton.
Founder Robert Pringle launched Pringle of Scotland as a manufacturer of knitted hosiery in 1815. Decades later, he saw an opportunity in knitted outerwear and began embracing and encouraging the technical innovations that would lead to the inception of his ever-growing knitwear collections.
Changing numerous hands across its 200-year history, today the brand is helmed by Frances Stringer who was appointed women’s design director in October 2016. Born in the North of England, she began her design career at Aquascutum, before joining Mulberry to lead the womenswear design team as the company expanded its ready-to-wear collections.
Stringer expertly combines heritage signatures from the brand’s archives with contemporary tailoring and techniques to create truly modern collections. Today Pringle of Scotland is famed for its languid silhouettes in supple cashmere, its signature Argyle design, and its Twinsets – an elegant combination of a sleeveless cashmere top under a matching cardigan.
To celebrate its 200th anniversary and the relevance of knitwear in contemporary fashion, in 2015 Pringle worked with National Museums Scotland to curate an exhibition charting the label’s long history within the Scottish knitwear industry.
In 1956, Pringle was awarded the Royal Warrant by Her Majesty the Queen.
Over the years, Pringle has been loved and worn by film stars like Joan Crawford, Margaret Lockwood, Jean Simmons and Grace Kelly, as well as modern a-listers like Gigi Hadid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Olivia Palermo and Tilda Swinton.
Pringle of Scotland is stocked in the world’s most prestigious luxury department stores including Harrods and Selfridges in London, Harvey Nichols in Hong Kong, La Rinascente in Rome, Tsum in Moscow, and Takashimaya in Tokyo. The label is also available at select top-tier boutiques globally including the Balancing in Shanghai, 10 Corso Como in Seoul, and Ikram in Chicago.
